Philip
Philip De Schutter started playing music at a very young age. When Santa
Claus brings him a toy keyboard, he starts replaying the little music
pieces that he just heard. A few years later, he goes for his first piano
lessons at the Music Academy in Zandhoven. But the lessons are too
classical, with too many rules. He decides to stop the lessons.
Two years later, his father gives him a Jazz CD. Philip falls in love with
that music. He absolutely wants to learn how to play the Jazz! His parents
buy him a saxophone and he picks up the lessons, Jazz lessons this time, at
the Music Academy in Lier. Jef Neve is one of his teachers. He’s so
full of Jazz and Sax that he quickly decides that he wants to make this his
living. As a result, he graduates in June 2009 as Master in Music, for Jazz
Sax, Clarinet and Flute, at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven. His teachers,
amongst others, are Frank Vaganée, Tom Mahieu, Ron Van Rossum, Dre
pallemaerts, Nic Thys, Pierre Van Dormael, Bart Van Caenegem, Lode Mertens
… He also took workshops with Phil Woods, Dave Liebman, Toots
Thielemans, Kurt Van Herck, Mark Turner, John Ruocco, Maria Schneider, Bert
Joris, Bill Carrothers, Mark Levine, …
Philip teaches since 2007, in private lessons as well as in various schools
and workshops (workshops in Sint Niklaas, Kreamuze, academy of Lier,
academy of Grimbergen, music school in Tremelo, academy of Antwerp, academy
of Turnhout …).
Philip participated in various projects: Oliver Nelson Project, Cannonball
Adderley Project, Phil & Quill Project, school projects with Nic Thys
and Dre Pallemaerts, Tripple Big Band Projects. He also played with Frank
Vaganée, Jean-Paul Estiévenart, Toni Vitacolonna, Stijn Wauters, Joey
Lim, Natan Wouters, Lara Rosseel, David Broeders, Janos Bruneel, …
Meanwhile, Philip continues studying the composition at the
Lemmensinstituut.
