Andries Baele studied at the Lemmensinstituut in Leuven, where he graduated
as a “master in music” and as a “bachelor in music theory
and writing”. He also took first prize in harmony with Carl Van
Eyndhoven, and first price in violin with Wim De Moor, Otto Derolez and
Nico Baltussen. His thesis was titled Tips for the electric or
amplified violin. He participated in master classes with, amongst
others, Oxalys (chamber music), Michel Pieters (jazz violin), Johannes De
Leertouwer (classical violin), Maarten Weyler (jazz harmony), Wim Henderix
(composition)… He also took improvisation and combo lessons with John
Ruoco, Ben Sluis and Serge Lazarevitch.
After graduating as a music teacher he undertook various training sessions
with such titles as Bonding with the class, Autism and Music, Action
plan for special education … He was interim teacher for music theory
and violin at the music academies in Diest and Mortsel, musical education
and violon at the music workshops in Leuven and Borgerhout, violin for
beginners at the children’s choir De Diesteltjes in Diest, and music
in special education at the Ter Bank school in Heverlee.
Andries has written music for various ensembles and in different styles. He
started to improvise at jam sessions playing world music, jazz and blues,
bluegrass and gypsy jazz. Today he demonstrates his talent for
improvisation playing with the bands ‘Black
Velvet’ (Irish) and ‘The Rose Room Swing’ (Sinti & Roma). He has
been involved in CD recordings with Jesse Ashfield, Ronny Mosuse, Black
Velvet and Steven De Wit, and in TV shows with Bart Peeters and Geert
Waegeman.
